Chapter 16 â Ben
Sewellâs letter is brief and to the point, just as Iâd hoped it would come across. I still make a show of studying the single sheet of paper before I hand it back to Carter.
âI stand by what I said,â I tell her. âHe doesnât sound pissed about you putting together this mini-retrospective, but clearly, he doesnât want you to push the issue anymore.â
âThatâsâ¦â Carter says and trails off abruptly. âCan we put Sewell aside for a minute?â
âEasy to do. I suggest we put him aside for longer than that.â
She ignores my latter comment. âWe need to talk about last night.â
âWhat about it? Everyone agrees it was a slam-dunk success.â
âYes, but a success for who? And for what?â
âI donât follow.â
âYes, you do. Some woman shows up at the opening, and boom, Iâm your fiancée.â She presents her upraised palms. âYour fiancée!â
âYouâre acting like youâd been married off against your wishes to a foreign prince,â I tell her. âIt was all an act, and it worked.â
âAll an act? And kissing me was part of that act?â
And there it is. I knew that my spontaneity would come back on me.
The thing was that, dammit, I donât regret doing it, not even a little bit. Iâd do it again if I was in that situation again.
I want to do it again, I realize.
Iâm suddenly aware that Carter and I are standing quite close, a bit closer than conversational distance. The only barrier between us is Sewellâs letter. Then Carter tosses it onto her desk and we donât even have that anymore.
I need to disconnect this conversation, and now.
âWe can talk about that later,â I say, hoping that there is more conviction in my voice than I feel, which is not much at all. âI haveââ
âWork to do?â she finishes angrily. âI donât think so. I think we need to talk about it right now!â
She plants her balled-up fists on her hips and stands her ground. As she does so, the neckline of her blouse shifts a bit, allowing me a glimpse of the creamy flesh below the hollow of her throat. Itâs like a pale arrow pointing down.
âWell?â she demands.
I close the distance between us in one step, put my hands on her waist, and kiss her hard.
At first, she stiffens in surprise, grabbing the edge of the desk behind her to keep her balance. Then she melts into it, her eyes drifting closed.
I move forward even more, and my hips are now brushing against hers. I wonder if she can tell just how much I want her. Then her body sways towards me, pressing against me, and there can be no doubt that she can tell.
She responds by putting one hand to the back of my neck and raising one leg slightly, just barely curving it around the back of one of my calves.
Thatâs it. Thereâs no stopping now. I kiss her harder than ever, our tongues scouring each other, our hands moving over each otherâs bodies.
I reach behind her thighs and lift her easily, sitting her on the edge of the desk.
